The collision of a passenger bus with a tricycle in Bauang, La Union left 46 people injured and one dead. The two passengers of the tricycle were grievously injured. One occupant remains in critical condition, while the other has sadly passed from their injuries.
Chief Inspector Silverio Oridinado Jr. reports that of the 46 injured in the accident, 6 are in critical condition at the Ilocos Training Regional Medical Center in San Fernando City.
Police investigation into the incident has yet to determine whether the crash was a result of human or mechanical error. Reportedly, the bus driver, Michael R. Gatchalian, 40, of San Fabian, Pangasinan, lost control of his vehicle, causing him to veer into the opposite lane of traffic, hit the tricycle, and careen into a nearby rice field where the bus toppled onto its side. The bus bore Plate No. AWB 509 and registered to Elpidio Munio of Barangay Maria Christina East, Bangar, La Union.
The struck tricycle was driven by a Ronnie S. Villaluz, 41, of Bauang, La Union, and had registration numbers: Body No. 0582 and Conduction Sticker No. 0136067.
Bus driver Gatchalian fled the scene following the crash and is now the subject of a manhunt, says Ordinado. When caught, Gatchalian may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple physical injuries.
