If Filipinos don’t start practicing safe sex, the Philippines would explode. At the rate we are producing babies, we will soon fill up every nook and cranny of every island and islets of our small archipelago. I may be exaggerating, but it may soon happen if we continue to refuse to teach safe sex to the younger generation. That or they die young from HIV.
Let’s all be practical and realistic and accept the fact that Filipinos as young as 15 years old are having sex and most of them are doing so without contraceptions.
Based on the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), “one in ten young Filipino women age 15-19 has begun childbearing: 8 percent are already mothers and another 2 percent are pregnant with their first child.”
If the younger generation don’t get pregnant early, their chance of getting infected of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) increases.
Eric Tayag, Department of Health (DOH) spokesperson said there is an increase in the number of younger Filipinos infected with HIV. This has prompted them to start a campaign to teach sex education to high school students.
My point is this: Parents, your children are having sex much earlier than you would want to believe. Believe me, on this matter, ignorance is not bliss. Sex education may offend your conservative beliefs, but it is better to teach them how to practice safe sex and save their future, than to just continue to ignore the fact that they are having sex and risk them getting pregnant or getting somebody pregnant.
