And hello, who wouldn’t be beaming with pride to represent her country as this year’s Miss Universe [insert country here]? Weird lang talaga para sa ‘kin. Hindi na natural, eh. Sabi sa website nila, “These women are savvy, goal-oriented and aware. The delegates who become part of the Miss Universe Organization display those characteristics in their everyday lives, both as individuals, who compete with hope of advancing their careers, personal and humanitarian goals, and as women who seek to improve the lives of others.”

Pero alam nating lahat (or ng mga nagsisikap mag-research, tulad ko) na grabe ang training/diet/meditation/isolation/stress ng mga contestants para ma-achieve yung perfect beach bod na parang “I was born this way” ang peg. 67 years na ang Miss Universe. Siguro dati, it was a no-pressure, come-as-your-own-naturally-beautiful-self kind of contest to showcase how beauty varies from one country and one individual from another. Pero ngayon, there is nothing realistic about how *most* of the contestants act. MY GOD. But surprise, surprise, may korona pa rin sila. ‘Yung “confidently beautiful with a heart,” agree ako doon. Pero kailangan ba talaga ng full-blown pageant, long gown, veneers, 24-inch waistlines, at mala-Diyosa na make-up para maibahagi mo ‘yung statement na ‘yun sa buong mundo? DAPAT HINDI. Pero dahil sa Miss Universe, it seems as if being a specific kind of beautiful is the only way to get yourself across.

Honestly, I am all for women empowerment and I applaud the efforts of the contestants (one-week diet nga, ‘di ko kaya, so wow, bow down ako sa kanila). But I’m taking a stand against superficial ways to showcase “who we are.” 2017 na.
