President Rody Duterte arrived in Russia last night for a historic four-day official visit. paving the way for the establishment of an agricultural trade link which will initially involve about $2.5-B worth of products which Moscow would like to buy from the Philippines over the next 12 months.

I will be joining President Duterte in Moscow tomorrow flying in from Budapest, Hungary with a four-man team which earlier visited Finland.
On Thursday, in the presence of President Duterte and Russian President Vladimir Putin, I and my Russian counterpart, Alexandr Tchakyov, will sign an agricultural trade agreement which will open the Russian market to Philippine agricultural and fisheries products.

President Putin has earlier announced that Russia is ready with about $2.5-B to buy fruits and fisheries products from the Philippines.
The Philippines, on the other hand, will open its doors to farm machineried, meat supply and other equipment needed to improve agriculture and fisheries in the country.

Several Philipine agriculture and fisheries producers have joined President Duterte in this trip hoping to bag the first substantive transactions which would follow the signing of the agreement on Thursday.

From Moscow, President Duterte will visit St. Petersburg on Friday before proceeding to Dubai for a two-day visit.

With a population of about 150 million and ranked 6th among the countries in the world with high GDP at $3.9-trillion, the opening of the Russia market for Philippine agriculture products would be a big boost to the economy of our country.

Moscow has long expressed interest in trading with the Philippines extensively but there was not much progress in the negotiations.
That was until President Duterte decided to make a trailblazing move to establish stronger relations with a country which has always been portrayed as a villain in the James Bond movies.
