An official of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Saturday said that the purging of agency officials is likely to continue, however the exact names and positions to be vacated are yet to be announced by President Rodrigo Duterte.
Assistant Commissioner Vincent Philip Maronilla said that the BOC is waiting for the Presiden’t announcement before removing any more officials from their posts.
“No comment. We would allow the President to first make an announcement on who are the personalities because right now we do not know who would be affected by the planned changes in the bureau,” he said in an interview.
Last Friday, President Duterte announced that he would order more officials from the BOC to be fired. The President has been on a campaign to affect change within the corruption-plagued agency.
Maronilla confirmed that he and BOC Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero had discussed the President’s pronouncement.
President Duterte reportedly plans to tap officials from the Armed Forces of the Philippines to succeed the vacated post. Guerrero is one of five ex-military officials currently occupying the top positions of the BOC, as well as Deputy Director Intelligence Group Raniel Ramiro, and Deputy Director for Internal Administration Group (IAG) Donato Belmonte San Juan.
