DAVAO CITY, March 8, 2017 — President Rodrigo Duterte received last Tuesday a delegation from the Chinese Government led by People’s Republic of China Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan.

The arrival comes amid Duterte’s claim that as much as $10 billion in terms of infrastructure and investments were headed here after Duterte’s goodwill visit to other countries starting last year.

Among those who visited the President during the courtesy call were Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua, and members of the Chinese delegation.

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez and Senator Alan Peter Cayetano accompanied President Duterte during the exchange.

A representative from the Chinese delegation reportedly backed out of an earlier scheduled visit after foreign affairs secretary Perfecto Yasay was quoted as saying the Philippines would stand by its claim over some areas in the South China Sea, a hotly contested area with the Philippines and China among the parties.

But Duterte clarified he would honor his commitment to the Chinese government.

“I think Secretary Yasay was misunderstood by the Chinese government but let me assure everybody… I would like to assure China, and this is what I have committed to do when I was there, that we will talk as friends,” Duterte said last month.
