Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said that support for Marinduque Lord Allan Velasco’s bid to be Speaker of the House is just a form of teasing and nothing serious.
“Kantyaw lang nila yan na kay Congressman Velasco knowing ang mga nangyari in the past na sinabi na siya at si Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano ang gusto maging Speaker,” said Duterte.
During the Hugpong ng Pagbabago’s (HNP) proclamation rally in Vigan City last Monday, Congressman Velasco was introduced to the stage as the next Speaker of the lower House. The epitaph was used at least two times during the event.
Velasco, who serves as HNP’s de facto deputy campaign manager, has been teased by neophyte Senatorial candidate Jiggy Manicad as “Speaker Velasco,” and called the next leader of the Lower House by Gov. Abet Garcia.
The Speakership race will culminate this July and many already concede that it will likely go to President Duterte’s running mate in the 2016 elections, former Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano.
Cayetano, one of Duterte’s closest allies, is eyeing a return to the legislative branch this mid-term election. He is seeking a seat in the House, representing the lone district of his hometown, Taguig City.
“With all humility, I will seek another term in my hometown, the district of Taguig and Pateros, and then let’s see where it goes from there,” Cayetano said after resigning from the DFA.
The decision to run for Congress came after Cayetano had a heart-to-heart talk with President Duterte.
“The President has a vision for the country of a safe and comfortable life for everyone. I was with him, like millions of Filipinos during the journey, so I really want him to succeed. So we had a heart-to-heart talk, and we both agreed that a role in Congress and a leadership position in Congress would be good in terms of pursuing that vision,” Cayetano said during a press interview on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders’ Gathering last year.
“I will not leave DFA unless it was OK with him,” Cayetano said in a separate interview after a flag retreat ceremony last year at the DFA Consular Affairs Office in Pasay City.
Duterte approved Cayetano’s resignation from the DFA and expressed support for his running mate’s congressional bid.
In an exclusive interview with Mindanation from October 29 last year, President Duterte said that Cayetano would do a “great job” as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives, should he win a seat.
