DAVAO CITY, Apr. 19, 2017 — President Rodrigo Duterte has officially declined the offer of the Board of Regents of the University of the Philippines for an honorary law degree.

UP traditionally offers the degree to the sitting President on the first year of service.

UP’s BOR is the highest policymaking body of UP’s autonomous units.

“With due respect sa University of the Philippines, I do not accept even if I was mayor. Hindi ako tumatanggap, as a matter of personal and official policy, I do not accept awards. Wala sa pagkatao ko,” President Duterte said.

Earlier in the day, Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said it would be up to President Duterte if the degree would be accepted by the Office of the President.

Speaking of tradition, the Dutertes traditionally reject offers of awards.

At one point, current Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has refused to be nominated to be among the world’s best mayors, as she said there were others who deserved the award.

President Duterte, meanwhile, repeatedly says he is just doing his job.

President Duterte made the statement during an ambush interview in Bohol.
