DAVAO CITY, November 24, 2016 — President Rodrigo Duterte yesterday said the ban on firecrackers will have to wait until next year since a lot of people have already invested in pyrotechnics for this year’s holiday celebration.

The President made the statement when asked if the ban would take effect this Christmas season.

According to Duterte, he aims for the rest of the country to follow the lead of his hometown Davao City, which has virtually zero firecracker casualties every year.

At this time, I’d like to put on notice everybody that I have been seriously considering… making the entire Philippines like Davao. We observe the Christmas time with the solemnity and… that befits (religion),” he said.

For now, however, firecrackers will still be allowed.

“They all have invested… it would not be fair. Nabili na nila iyong mga materials, bayad na iyong iba,” Duterte said.

He said he has asked Congress to file a law first banning firecrackers.

However, he said he is already considering drafting an executive order.
