- in Opinion

Irrelevant. The dictionary defines it as being “not connected with or relevant to something, beside the point, immaterial, not pertinent, not germane, off the subject, unconnected, unrelated, peripheral, extraneous, inapposite, inapplicable.”

In the Philippines today, this is what the leadership of the Catholic Church, the political opposition, and the gatekeepers of mainstream media have become. After having been in the center of power for so long, being forced into the sidelines has unhinged many of these so-called guardians of democracy and freedom.

Time after time, attempt after attempt, they have tried – and failed – to bring people into their side. To convince Filipinos that they, and only they hold the truth. And that anyone who disagrees with them is either stupid, ignorant, or outrightly evil.

While we agree that a healthy opposition is necessary for a strong democracy, the operative term is “healthy.” Not this pale imitation of honest dissent that we have in the country right now. A collection of entitled brats who are united only by their strong desire to get back what Duterte took from them – their self entitlements.

The Catholic bishops who rule their flock with absolute power. The political kings and kingmakers who have purposely kept their constituents poor and needy so that they can farm them for votes year after year. And the vultures of corporate mainstream media who have grown fat and powerful feeding of the tragedies and tribulations of the Filipino people.

This is the gallery of rogues that now stand – not in opposition to Duterte – but against the sovereign fucking will of the Filipino people. Villegas, Robredo, Trillanes, Binay, Roxas, Aquino, Drillon, Hontiveros, Pangilinan, De Lima, Lopez, Prieto, Ressa – remember these names. They are the ones who would insist on their version of Philippines without respect to yours, or to the millions of other Filipinos who have said – enough is enough.
