On June 30, 2016 the sun will rise on Mindanao just as it always has on countless dawns in the past. In the early hours of the morning its rays will color the eastern shores off Pusan Point with a faint light. Slowly growing in intensity until its fiery crown peeks from beyond the horizon.

The day will see it, as it always has, crossing the skies of Mindanao. Past the white-capped pacific surf crashing on the white sand beaches of Siargao, the mining ravaged island of Hinatuan, and the pockmarked slopes of Mt. Diwata. PHOTO BY RHONSON NG

But as the last of its fading light turns into darkness and the first faint stars appear in the night sky, the sun, which began the day just as it had for countless sunrises in the past, sets on a new Mindanao. And the first Mindanawon President.
