A suspect allegedly involved with a kidnap-for-ransom-group (KFRG) met his fate during a shootout with police in Zamboanga City. The KFRG was allegedly responsible for the kidnapping of an Italian priest 12 years ago.

The slain suspect was identified by Col. Thomas Joseph Martir, Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) director, to be KFRG member Masdal Jakaria.

The shootout occurred at around 1 a.m. Wednesday in Barangay Mampang. Jakaria was discovered by law enforcement officers as they executed a search warrant.

Jakaria opened fire on the policemen, prompting them to return fire.

Jakaria was struck during the shootout. The raiding team immediately called for medical assistance, but the suspect was declared dead by the attending physician.

The suspect was carrying a .45-caliber pistol, empty shells of the same caliber, as well as some bomb-making materials specifically five blasting caps and a detonating cord.

Jakaria was a suspect in the kidnapping of Fr. Giancarlo Bossi on June 10, 2007 in Barangay Bulawan, Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay. The KFRG freed Bossi on July 19 of the same year in the town of Karomatan, Lanao del Norte near the boundary with Lanao del Sur province.

Bossi died of lung cancer on September 23, 2012 at the age of 62 in Milan, Italy.

Jakaria was reportedly a follower of the
Muloc and Waning Abdusalam KFRG based in Zamboanga Sibugay.
