When Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray won her coveted crown, she brought the international spotlight back to the Philippines. During her run in the prestigious pageant, Gray featured the works of Filipino artisans from all the corners of the country in her costumes and gowns.
The beauty queen has enthusiastically and consistently promoted the Philippines in her career. The next step for her may be to formalize her position as an ambassador of tourism for the Philippines.
Gray and the Department of Tourism have been working together for a while now. The DOT helped Gray with her introduction clip for Miss Universe. The short video featured the natural beauty of the Philippines, specifically the world-renowned beaches of Palawan and the stunning landscapes of Mindanao.
“Cat has already been promoting the Philippines even before she won and thank you for that for promoting Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. You have made our country proud,” said DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat on Tuesday.
President Rodrigo Duterte has said that he intends to tap the beauty queen as the country’s next tourism ambassador.
“She wants to promote all, she was saying there’s so much to offer, so much to show the world,” Romulo-Puyat said.
The transportation secretary said that Gray expressed excitement at the opportunity to further promote the country’s destinations and beauty.
Gray said that promoting the Philippines on the international stage is “something she is very passionate about”.
On Tuesday, Gray paid courtesy calls on Senate President Vicente Sotto III prior to meeting with DOT officials, including Romulo-Puyat, in Makati City.
“I feel like if people will see what we have to offer, the level of interest will spike. We have so much potential to share that with the rest of the world. I hope that in my own way of being Miss Universe 2018, I could work in promoting the Philippines,” she said.
