The Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines system is as famous for its cheerdance performances as it is for its critical voice against the administration. However, students from the Visayas campus of the University of the Philippines system have taken their artistic expression too far with a dance routine that encourages the murder of President Rodrigo Duterte.
The lyrics reference the islands and resources in the West Philippine Sea, suggesting that President Duterte should be killed because he is “giving them” to China. These young scholars, despite supposedly being among the brightest young minds in the country, seem to have failed to properly study their history. President Duterte is actually brought Scarborough Shoal back to Filipino fishermen, who haven’t been able to enter the territory since President Aquino.
The routine seems to be based on Black Pink’s Kill this Love hit, which features a pretty iconic dance move which the UP Visayas students mimic.
Of course, netizens were not happy with this. Anyone with access to the internet can see that the students have definitely misunderstood their history of the conflict with Sea, or perhaps they just glossed over the parts that didn’t feed their bias. Either way, netizens were not happy. Read below some of the comments left on MindaVote’s post of the video. These are just a few out of 2000+ that echo the same sentiment.
Ironically – and this is just my hot take – most of these young liberals likely started over their distaste for the President with his hard-hitting take against illegal drugs. They decried human rights violations and said that even the most heinous criminals deserved their chance to live freely. And yet, here they are, advocating for senseless violence because they’re upset that their votes made up the tiny minority of Filipinos who didn’t support President Duterte. Hm, guess violence isn’t the answer when you don’t like the question?
Either way, this was an inappropriate dance. Of course, the UP Visayas admin decided that they won.
