Notes to the President

I have a secret to tell you.

I send Viber messages to the President. (Hindi kami ganon ka-close. Fuma-fan lang ako so wag nyo akong gawing tulay sa mga hinaing nyo sa Pangulo ng ganyan ganyan lang. I don’t have the kind of sway some of you imagine I do. Pramis. And even if I did, I wouldn’t go to him for favors. Anyone who knows me knows this about me. )

Love notes basically. I tell him, Hi Mr President, how are you? First of all, we love you and are so grateful for all you do for us. Then I give him a quote that I hope fortifies him.

I don’t forget just how hard his job is and I don’t forget the challenges in front of him. I don’t forget the slings and arrows aimed at him on a constant and daily basis. Relentless. Unforgiving. Thorough.

And I know how he picks himself up and dusts himself up and I know the look of determination on his face because I have seen it often enough to know there will be no stopping our President.

I know he has a keen appreciation of the role he plays in our country’s history and more important, I sense a man with an unshakeable sense of who he is and what he’s about and there will be no stopping him.

He will get us out to that higher place where we can breathe and finally let go of our children because it is safe now. A kinder, gentler country where they can dream their boldest dreams and then make those dreams happen. A country that has caught on with the rest of the world, no longer the sick man of Asia.

And he will do that even if it costs him his life.

Surely, even his enemies know this about him. Which is why they want to stop him—at whatever the cost is too.

But I have seen his face—and so have you. The look of determination is unmistakeable.

He’s that runner who will crawl to the finish line –if that’s what it takes—to finish this race that he started when he took on the real enemies of our country—the political and religious elite, international drug cartels . The only Philippine President to have done so.

And in my short messages to him, I tell him the truth.

You are not alone, Mr President. The whole country is behind you. And in front of you. And both your sides. And on top of you. And below you. We have you covered.

Lead and we shall follow.

Here’s a quote I gave him that I want to give you as well. It’s by one of the greatest minds of humanity, Carl Jung:

“The spirit of evil is the negation of the life force by fear. Only boldness can deliver us from fear. And if the risk is not taken, the meaning of life is violated.”

No fear, guys.
