Proud to be a woman

There is a right kind of pride.

When God looked at all He has done at the end of His creative work in Genesis 1, he saw “everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good” (verse 31). God took pride in what He had accomplished: the creation of the world, of all the creatures, and of male and female.

Why wouldn’t God be proud of His accomplishment? All His creatures are amazing. Every single one of them blends into a perfect harmony that makes the universe align and function properly. Even the first two human beings were a perfect match. In fact, woman was created as a response to man’s need of a perfect match.

Let us for a moment put the spotlight on the creation of man and woman:

When the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, neither wild plants nor grains were growing on the earth. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain to water the earth, and there were no people to cultivate the soil. Instead, springs came up from the ground and watered all the land. Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.

The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper who is just right for him.” So the Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would call them, and the man chose a name for each one. He gave names to all the livestock, all the birds of the sky, and all the wild animals. But still there was no helper just right for him.

So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep. While the man slept, the Lord God took out one of the man’s ribs and closed up the opening. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib, and he brought her to the man.

“At last!” the man exclaimed.

“This one is bone from my bone,
and flesh from my flesh!
She will be called ‘woman,’
because she was taken from ‘man.’”

So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

— Taken from Genesis 1:27; 2:5-7, 15, 18-23, New Living Translation

Pause for a moment and reflect on the fact that God took a different process in creating woman. God created man differently from the way he created all the animals and birds and fish. Yet, He took a totally different and meticulous process in creating woman. It was special. It was artistic. It was unique. The NLT Life Application Bible beautifully comments on this: “God’s creative work was not complete until he made woman. He could have made her from the dust of the ground, as he made man. God chose, however, to make her from the man’s flesh and bone.” Woman was so beautiful that when the man first saw her, he broke into poetry (Genesis 2:23)!

“At last!” the man exclaimed.
“This one is bone from my bone,
and flesh from my flesh!
She will be called ‘woman,’
because she was taken from ‘man.’”

The Bible also clearly says that both male and female were created by God in His image. No one is above or below the other. Each one has a unique role to fulfill; one supplementing the other. They are their own person yet they perfectly match.  Apart, they are individually different; together they complement each other to bring forth life.

There is a right kind of pride. And this is taking pride in who we are in God’s order of creation. This is the kind of pride, which Elisabeth Elliot in her book Let Me Be a Woman said, “every man and woman under God ought to cultivate.” As Isak Dinesen beautifully explains in her book Out of Africa:

“Pride is faith in the idea that God had when he made us. A proud man is conscious of the idea, and aspires to realize it. He does not strive towards a happiness, or comfort, which may be irrelevant to God’s idea of him. His success is the idea of God, successfully carried through, and he is in love with his destiny.”

Do you take pride in being created woman? Are you conscious of the sublime idea that God created you for a purpose? Do you aspire to realize that for which you were divinely designed? Have you fallen in love with your destiny — a woman? It’s women’s month. Be proud you’re a woman!
