DAVAO CITY, June 9, 2017 — The administration of President Rodrigo Duterte will launch this Monday, Independence Day, the free Wi-Fi and internet services along the entire stretch of the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA).
The Presidential Communications Operations Office, in a statement, said that this was among the marching orders of President Duterte during his first State of the Nation Address.
The implementing agencies are the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and the National Telecommunications Commmission (NTC).
The project, called “Alay Para sa Malayang Pilipino,” aims to connect the internet users on major areas along EDSA with high speed internet.
“I have ordered the newly-created DICT to develop a National Broadband Plan to accelerate the deployment of fiber optic cables and wireless technologies to improve Internet speed,” President Duterte said in July last year.
The project involved the provision of access points via areas such as the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT 3) line.
The government will be testing the project on Sat., June 10, with the priority areas being the stretch from the Cubao to Guadalupe stations.
