CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The city government here has expressed condolences to the family of Col. Nelson Aganon, director of Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO), who passed away Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Oscar Moreno described Aganon as “a person and public servant who possessed positive values”. He also ordered the local government to fly the flag at half-mast.

Moreno underscored the need to find an immediate replacement for Aganon. “Classes in all levels will start in a few days. Accordingly, I have indicated our intention of receiving a new Chief of Police in CDO soon. With this, I know the selection process begins,” he said.

Maj. Rey Taboclaon, acting city police spokesperson, said that attending physicians at the Polymedic Medical Plaza here declared Aganon dead at 3:30 p.m.

Aganon, 46, was confined at the hospital’s intensive care unit since May 23.

The doctor, however, did not elaborate the cause of the police officer’s death, Taboclaon said, although it was reported that Aganon sustained severe head injury during the 45-day motorcycle-riding course he and other law enforcers had participated in.

Taboclaon said they found it hard to believe that their superior was already gone, contrary to the information they received that Aganon’s situation was improving.

“We were surprised because we were told that there was an improvement in his condition, that his vital signs were stable,” Taboclaon said, referring to the medical bulletin released hours before Aganon’s death.

Taboclaon said the entire local police force grieved over Aganon’s death as he was remembered “for the wisdom and fatherly advice” that he imparted to his subordinates.

“He is strict to those who are not in line with the policy of the organization. But if you are attuned to the policies, you cannot call him strict. He is just meticulous when it comes to work,” he said.

Before Aganon’s remains are brought to his hometown in Nueva Ecija, it will stay at a local funeral home for public viewing for a day or two.

Aganon assumed the city police leadership on April 2, 2018.
