All teaching and non-teaching personnel of the Department of Education (DepEd) will be treated to a P3,000 bonus in celebration of the agency’s coming anniversary of December 20.
Education Secretary Leonor Briones announced the bonus while at a press conference help at the DepEd central office. DepEd Order No. 47 series of 2018, released on November 6, provided the Guidelines on the Grant of Anniversary Bonus. Under the order, all full or part time employees of the DepEd are eligible to receive the bonus, so long as their employment is regular and they have rendered at least one year of service by June 23.
Thus, consultants and employees engaged through job orders and contracts of service will not be eligible to receive the bonus. Those who have not yet served for a year by the milestone date of June 23, thanks to absence without leave, or those found guilty of any offense during the five-year interval between the milestone years will likewise not be eligible.
“That will cost us, PHP3,000 lang (only), but considering the huge army we have in DepEd, that will already be PHP2.8 billion,” said Briones.
The department has 800,000 teachers and staff employed. The large number of personnel means that cascading the order to all would take time to implement.
The founding date of the DepEd was identified by former president Fidel Ramos though an administrative order to be June 23, 1898. The National Historic Commission of the Philippines dates the department’s founding to December 20, 1863, citing this as when a modern public education system was installed in the country via Royal Decree by Queen Isabella II of Spain.
