DAVAO CITY, January 15, 2017 — President Rodrigo Duterte called for a shared partnership among the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during the formal ceremonies of this year’s hosting of the Philippines.

This as Duterte formally accepted  the Philippines’ chairmanship of the subregion today.

In his speech, the President looked back on the 50 years of partnership among the 10 member nations and how things have gone for the better since the launching of ASEAN 50 years ago.

It is an occasion to reaffirm the shared aspirations and values that will lead ASEAN to the future our peoples truly deserve,” he said.

According to Duterte, his state visits to some of the member nations showed how warm the countries are toward each other.

The warmth of the reception and the undeniable connections we encountered speak well of the inroads we have achieved since 1967 when representatives declared the establishment of the Association,” he said.

At that time, people were speaking of the primary responsibility of Southeast Asian countries to strengthen the economic and social stability in the region,” he added.

As early as 1967, the peoples of the member nations already saw the need to unify the subregion to achieve common shared goals.

We expressed our shared determination to ensure stability and security from external interference in any form or manifestation in order to preserve our national identities. Fifty years hence, we see ourselves much changed. For the better… The march towards sustainable development and inclusive growth continues to take place.”

According to Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr., the working committees will be conducting 118 meetings throughout the year in various places in the Philippines for various agenda regarding this year’s hosting.
