DAVAO CITY, November 12, 2016 — President Rodrigo Duterte yesterday distanced himself from being compared with US President-elect Donald Trump.
I am just a small molecule in this planet. He is now the President of the most powerful country in the world,” he said.
Duterte, who spoke to reporters at the Davao International Airport after arriving from Malaysia on Friday, said the comparison is pointless because the Philippines is lagging too far behind the United States.
I am just a President struggling to barely to just above the water ang ano natin. I say I would have… you have to worry about ourselves first.”
He said the only thing he and Trump have in common is “the passion to serve, and it is (a) given.”
Meanwhile, Duterte said he would continue pushing for an independent foreign policy. He had earlier given notice that he would “cut” military and economic ties with the US and pursue stronger partnerships with neighboring countries, particularly China.
I’m not into the habit of reneging on my word,” he said.
He insisted that the new-found partnership with China and the ASEAN remains.
I will sail the state of the nation, and it should be pushed by the wind of self-interest only. The self-interest of our nation.”
