Yesterday was a historic day for Philippine sports. Not only did our medal count rise to a high of 71, including 38 Golds, but it was also a day for personal bests and personal records for our athletes. One amazing story is that of Hidilyn Diaz.
After years of success on the international stage, including a silver Olympic medal and the title of reigning champ for the Asian Games, Diaz has finally added a well-deserved SEA Games Gold to her chest. The win is even sweeter as it was earned in front of her home country.
Diaz placed first for the women’s 55-kg division of the Southeast Asian Games weightlifting event yesterday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium. The audience cheered as Diaz lifted a combined total of 211-kg in the snatch and the clean-and-jerk. Her absolute dominance on stage earned wild applause from the audience, many of whom were proud Filipinos.
Diaz shared the podium with silver-placer Vietnam bet Thi Thuy Nguyen, who lifted a combined 197-kg (82kg snatch, 115kg clean-and-jerk), and bronze medalist Juliana Klarisa of Indonesia, who had a combined lift of 175-kg (80 kgs snatch, 95 kg clean-and-jerk).
