Indonesian President Joko Widodo posted his personal thanks to Philippine Surfer Roger Casugay for the latter’s act of compassion towards his Indonesian competitor, Arip Nurhidayat.
“Winning competition is important,” reads Widodo’s caption.
“Sportsmanship must also be held high, but humanity is above everything,” continued the Indonesian President.
“My appreciation for the Philippine Surfers, Roger Casugay, who gave up the opportunity to reach the gold medal to help his rival, Indonesian athlete Arip Nurhidayat who fell in the race,” Widodo added.
“Best regards from Indonesia,” ends the caption.
The surfers were out fighting for the gold medal for the 30th SEA Games’ surfing event when Nurhidayat’s safety leash was compromised. The visiting athlete was bombarded with strong waves.
Sensing the danger facing his co-surfer, Casugay abandoned his bid for first place to rescue his competitor. Both athletes made it back to shore safely.
