MANILA — President Rodrigo R. Duterte has floated the idea of simply waiting for the communist insurgency to end on its own.
Duterte, who last April said he is considering the creation of a new peace panel, made this suggestion during the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) miting de avance in Pasig City on Saturday (May 11) night.
“The Communist Party. Itong (This) Communist Party na ito, I think hintayin na lang natin na matapos ang natural life nila pati akin (I think it’s better to wait for their natural life to end, as well as mine),” Duterte said.
“Kasi matanda naman si Sison (Because Sison is old anyway),” he added, referring to CPP founding chair Jose Maria Sison, who is now in self-exile in the Netherlands.
Earlier, Sison said that the CPP’s political wing, the National Democratic Front (NDF), will not recognize the new peace panel.
Duterte further criticized Sison, saying he was sure that both he and the CPP founding chair would go to hell when they die.
“I’d be happy to go with him hand in hand to the mouths of hell. Hindi man talaga kami mapunta ng langit. Talagang impyerno ‘yan (We won’t go to heaven. It will surely be hell),” Duterte said.
Duterte mentioned his intention to create a new peace panel with at least three representatives from the military.
Earlier, Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. Welcomed Duterte’s desire to create a new peace panel which will be tasked to “oversee” localized peace talks.
Galvez said the government will be “directly engaging the people on the ground to address the fundamentals of the problem” through the creation of the new peace panel. (PNA)
