I just heard that Mocha will be writing for the Philippine Star and I am torn.
On one side I am delighted by the fact that Mocha Uson will have a column in the Philippine Star as this clearly signals the capitulation of mainstream media to the resurgent power of social media as an alternative information source. For the past months Mocha has been kicking their butts all over the internet and they are now raising the white flag. As the cowards saying goes, “if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.”
But even as I am pleased by this development, I also feel a lot of apprehension, particularly with regard to the ulterior motives of the owners of the paper in inviting Mocha to be one of their columnists. It is the same uneasiness I felt when I heard that Martin Andanar was going to get his own column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Maybe I’m just being paranoid, but I just don’t trust these guys to do us any favors.
Whatever the publishers of these papers are up to, I seriously doubt that they have the best interests of President Duterte or Mocha at heart. At the very least, they recognize that Mocha has a very wide audience and they want to make money off of her. At worst, they want to exert some control over her content. Whatever their motives are – it just feels too much like a Trojan Horse for comfort.
And my sense of foreboding is not at all helped by the reaction of the daughter of one of the Philippine Star’s owners to Mocha becoming one of their columnists.
Regina Belmonte, granddaughter of Betty Go-Belmonte, took to Twitter to vent her disapproval, calling Mocha a “reprehensible person” and characterizing her as “garbage” as she questioned the wisdom of her father in allowing Ms. Uson to be part of their newspaper.
“I just took a nap and woke up to find Mocha Uson having a column in our newspaper. WHAT THE FUCK?…Are we seriously getting that reprehensible person Mocha Uson as a columnist??? Why are we giving garbage a bigger platform to mislead the country?”
With this kind of venomous welcome, it’s hard for me to imagine how this could turn out well. If it had been me on the receiving end of that tirade I don’t think I would even use their paper to wipe my dog’s ass, let alone help them make money from people who read what I write. But then, that’s me. As for Mocha, whatever she decides we wish her well, and she can always count on us to have her back.
