President Duterte is delivering a hard wake up call to all the mainstream media outfits in the Philippines. Listen up and listen good: True Freedom of Speech should be FREE, not paid for or sold.
This means that information and the right to be informed should have nothing to do with the investors and shareholders of corporations.
What all this means is that ABS CBN does not own freedom of speech. Toppling their media empire by refusing to renew their franchise isn’t a suppression of speech. It’s a justified move by a government which has finally put its foot down. In the same way, Rappler does not represent press freedom. No one reporter embodies journalistic integrity.
Fighting against corporations who are seeking to turn information into business is the way to save freedom of speech. Right now, ABS CBN and is peers are killing it for their bottomlines. Mainstream media wants to hoard and control knowledge so that they can construct a favorable reality for their quarterly reports.
But we are fighting back. These corporations do not have a monopoly on truths. The reason they want to maintain the image of integrity surrounding their institution is so that their industry can continue to be profitable, but we won’t give them that chance. Shape up or ship out. Your reign of terror is over. We are in control.
