Senator Kiko Pangilinan, president of the once ruling Liberal Party, has a New Year’s message for the Filipino people. Sure, it’s a tone deaf, irrelevant, and self-serving message but it’s the holidays so we should give the poor guy an audience, right?
The world has entered a new decade, but Senator Pangilinan’s New Year’s wish is so 2016. He says that he wishes Filipinos “make a commitment to continue standing for our rights and what is trust, and for our future and our children”. With this message, he should have been more specific with his audience. The “our” he refers to is him, his Liberal party friends, and other diehard critics who still try to cling to their fantasy of President Duterte ruining the country.
“Nawa’y maging 20-20 ang pagtingin ng taumbayan sa katotohanan sa 2020. Gawin nating mas makahulugan ang bagong taon, at mas magiging masaya tayong lahat!” said Pangilinan.
He continued on to hope that the new year would “usher fresh hopes and strength to help us stay the course and never waver until we achieve a just, peaceful, and prosperous nation”, in the face of course of the challenges he faces as part of the minority.
Is Senator Kiko aware that the country is prospering? That the system is just, finally, even against elites who have long evaded prosecution? And that the nation is closer to peace than it was before, since our chief executive is actually respected?
It’s 2020 already Sen. Don’t you think it’s time your party moves on?
