A new initiative in the House of Representatives sees Members pledging a portion of their January 2020 salaries to raise P10 M to be given as an additional incentive for Filipino athletes who take home the gold in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.
This act of solidarity with Team Philippines was triggered by House Resolution No. 568, filed by Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano. The resolution seeks to recognize the “Philippines’ massive medal haul” through an additional cash incentive from the House, to be added on top of the cash prize which medalists are entitled to under law or any other prizes which they may receive from the Philippine Olympic Committee.
“The leaders and members of the House of Representatives deem it proper to deduct individual pledges from their salaries for January 2020 as additional incentives to Filipino gold medal winners in the 30th SEA Games,” read the resolution.
House Leaders, specifically House Majority Leader Martin Romualdez, Deputy Speakers Paolo Duterte and Prospero Pichay, House Youth and Sports Development Committee chairman Eric Martinez, and Philippine Olympic Committee president and Cavite Rep. Abraham Tolentino, supported the measure.
The Philippines is hosting the 30th SEA Games from November 30 to December 11. In total, 1,094 Filipino athletes are competing. So far, Team Philippines has had an amazing performance, collecting 56 gold medals, 41 silver medals, and 22 bronze medals.
