DAVAO CITY — In time for Christmas, Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) no longer have to pay taxes for Balikbayan Boxes below P150,000, a representative of the Bureau of Customs said.
The issuance takes effect December 25.
Bureau of Customs spokesperson Col. Neil Anthony Estrella, in a press conference Tuesday, said that the BOC Administrative Order 05-2016 “lifts taxes on balikbayan boxes for qualified Filipinos while abroad, including Filipino citizens who are residing abroad and Filipinos who are holders of student, investors, and tourist visas.”
The only condition for the tax exemption is for items that are not considered household effects or personal items.
Items must also not be in commercial quantities.
OFWs may avail of the tax exemption three times every year.
